Working out exactly what all that information on the back of food products can be more like deciphering a complex code.

Mum, Suzy Harte consults food labels each day when packing her children’s lunches, making sure they’re as healthy as possible.

And to make things more difficult, the children’s school is a nut-free-zone, among other intolerances.

“I think we’ve got egg this year, fish, and dried mango which is a surprising one,” Suzy said.

Well, a new website to be launched on Monday eatingsafe.com is aiming to change that.

So far it has more than twelve thousand food items and their labels on its database, and it’s all conveniently categorised, meaning you can search for a particular product, say orange juice. Then you can further refine your search by breaking it down by its nutrients, for instance, how much sodium it contains.

That can come in handy for those with food sensitivities or allergens. And finally you can search for food additives, in orange juice – it could be the preservatives.

“At the click of the mouse instead of standing in the supermarket looking at package on package on package like we used to do in the good old days,” low fat chef Michelle Trute said.

Michelle is the brains behind it all, and says the site allows you to tailor your search according to YOUR personal dietary or nutritional needs.

“Whether you’re a gym junkie and you want to know what the best energy drink is, if you’ve got children or family who’ve got any allergens or intolerances to food, if you’re someone who’s watching your weight and you’re wanting to lose a few kilos you’ve got the benefit of comparing the kilojoules and the fats and the sodium,” Michelle said. Full access to the site will cost you sixty five dollars a year and includes an area to create your own shopping list and recipes.
